Monarc Precast Concrete – Where Culture Meets Craftsmanship

Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa is a world-class wellness destination that honours the centuries-old healing traditions of Ngāti Whakaue and the geothermal power of Rotorua. At the core of this architecturally stunning and culturally rich development lies over 1,000m² of Nauhria’s Monarc Precast Concrete, used to deliver both structure and storytelling.

The project features 67 custom Monarc wall panels and 56 precision-formed columns soaring up to 9 metres high. These were manufactured using a specially formulated 50MPa architectural concrete blend, enhanced with Xypex admixture for long-term durability in Rotorua’s extreme geothermal and seismic environment. Reinforced with NatSteel rebar – boasting 95% recycled content and NZ’s lowest embodied carbon footprint – the precast elements reflect a deep commitment to sustainability and future generations.

Monarc finishes elevate concrete to an art form. From diamond-honed polished panels to ribbed fluted textures with Monarc’s signature diamond-brushed finish, each surface was carefully crafted to reflect the raw volcanic character of the landscape while complementing the warmth of Innowood and stone. A collaborative design process saw full-scale 3D mock-ups trialled and perfected with RCG Architects and Hawkins Construction to ensure every detail honoured the vision of Ngāti Whakaue.

Wai Ariki’s precast elements are more than structural – they are architectural expressions of whakapapa, resilience, and refinement. Monarc helped shape a facility that is not only built to last, but built to connect.
